The
AfM was founded in 1977 by nine German Mammillaria
amateurs and it was registered in the association
register of the city of Münster on December 12,
1977. Today, the AfM counts about 370 members from
18 countries. Besides the individual members, there
are quite a number of Botanical Gardens and other
institutions in Europe and around the world members
of the AfM.
In 1990, the two societies ZAG-Mammillaria (founded
in 1970) from the former GDR and AfM merged.
The
publication of the
Journal
MAMMILLARIA ,
edited by the AfM, is an important vehicle for communication
and cooperation of members sharing the result of their
studies in the field, in the greenhouse, and in their
libraries. Due to its high quality, it has become
a recognised journal in the cacti and succulent literature.
The
Loose
Leaf Collection (LBS) is
a detailed collected edition of species, subspecies,
varieties, and synonyms, which is replenished annually.
Annual
Spring and Fall
Meetings
give the members
the opportunity to discuss their experiences in a
friendly get-together with lectures.
Every
member can borrow books, journals, and other publications
from the continuously growing
Library
of the society.
The
society owns a large
Slide
Library, usable
by all members. A
Plant Collection has
been established at the Botanical Garden of the Martin
Luther University Halle.
Seed
donated by members is processed by the
Seed
Distribution team,
and offered once a year in a seed list enclosed with
the journal.
In
its SEM
Archive, the
AfM provides a growing number of Scanning Electron
Microscope (SEM) photographs of seed, available for
its members if required.
